Types of Eye Emergencies

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience:

Severe or sudden eye pain
Sudden change in or loss of vision
Sudden flashes or floaters
Infections (like pink eye)
Very red eyes
Swelling around the eye or eyelid
Eye injury or trauma
Foreign substance or object in the eye

If you experience an eye emergency outside of our office hours, please visit your nearest emergency room.

First-Aid Tips for Eye Emergencies

If you experience a chemical splash, wash your eyes out for fifteen minutes with cool, clean water then seek immediate medical attention.
For minor eye trauma, place a cold compress over your eye. For blunt force trauma, seek medical help immediately.
If you experience a corneal abrasion or scratch, do not rub your eye or apply a bandage. Abrasions and scratches are susceptible to infection. Seek medical help immediately.

WHMIS & Workplace Emergencies

Your chances of experiencing an eye emergency increase if you work in a hazardous workplace such as a construction site or lab. Every job site should have a Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System guideline available for reference to explain the risks of your particular job site.
Make sure you always wear the appropriate protective gear at work (and play). If you are not sure what safety equipment you need, please speak to your supervisor.
